Legal bookkeeping

Bookkeeping that understands client money

Law firm bookkeeping is its own discipline: client money and office money must never blur, and every matter needs its own clean record. We keep both sides straight so your practice can focus on the law.

What we handle

  • Client and office bank posting, kept strictly separated
  • Time, fees, cost recoveries and disbursements entered against individual matters
  • Costs and profit bills posted correctly
  • Costs transfers between client and office account, done properly and promptly
  • Client and office bank reconciliations
  • VAT returns prepared and filed
  • Integration of LEAP with Xero for your office accounts

Because the records are kept matter by matter, your fee earners see the true position on every file, and the reports your accountant and regulator expect can be produced without a scramble.

Why firms hand this to a specialist

A general bookkeeper can keep a trading company's books well and still get a law firm's wrong, because the rules around client money are unforgiving and the software behaves differently. This is work we do regularly, with the systems legal practices actually use.

We work alongside your COFA and your reporting accountant, keeping the day-to-day records in the shape their oversight requires.

Legal bookkeeping questions

Which software do you work with?

Our legal clients run LEAP for practice management with Xero handling the office accounts, and we manage the integration between the two. If your firm uses a different combination, tell us what you run and we will be straight about whether we can support it well.

Do you handle the office account as well as client money?

Yes. The same person keeps both sides: client and office bank posting, costs transfers between the two, reconciliations for each, and the VAT returns that sit on top. Keeping both in one place is precisely what stops the two getting tangled.

Can you take over from an existing arrangement mid-year?

Yes. We review how the records have been kept, reconcile both accounts to a clean starting position and agree the handover with your current bookkeeper or accountant, so matter balances carry across intact and nothing is left unposted between the two arrangements.
